Mojo Hand FX profile – Mojo Risin’

IT WAS NO sure thing in 2012, when Brad Fee took on his Mojo Hand brand of effects pedals as a full time gig. He had just sold out his portion of popular boutique effects retailer Tone Factor and knew he had a tough road ahead to grow the small brand into a daily breadwinner for himself, his family and staff. The seeds of Mojo Hand can be traced back to around 2006 and the beginnings of the Tone Factor Custom Shop.  more...

Mission Engineering is in control

STOP ME if you’ve heard this one before. A practicing musician and electronics handyman is hit up by a friend to create a new widget to fill a specific niche in his ever-evolving guitar rig. After spitballing ideas over coffee, the handyman retreats to his garage and emerges a short time later with a working prototype. The friend is stoked and after some testing reports back that the prototype is everything he wanted and more.  more...

EarthQuaker Devices: Rare Birds

DOWN THE narrow staircase that leads to the basement of Jamie Stillman and Julie Robbins’ Akron, Ohio home one wouldn’t expect to find anything different than in any other basement across the Mid-West… a few boxes, some old electronics, some family heirlooms. But in this house, the boxes, electronics and heirlooms are one in the same… and there is a ton of it. Let’s face it, as you move north along the Pacific Coast Highway things start to get dicey. The sun fades in a cloak of persistent gray and a general gloom becomes the harbinger of the days ahead. Welcome to the Pacific Northwest!  more...
The Truth About Salvage Custom

The Truth About Salvage Custom

IT SOUNDED like a good plan. A freelance marketing specialist, with a nice little group of clients, decides to use a bit of downtime during a big project to build himself a pedalboard. Already a handy woodworker, the results of the initial build are impressive enough that he opts to share his creation with friends and local musicians. The feedback is phenomenal, with a few folks even willing to place an order for their own boards.  more...

M.I. knows MI

YOU MAY know Sydney-based MI Audio for their popular and ever-expanding range of effects pedals, but Aussies have long known that they also make exceptional amplifiers too... and thanks to a trip to Winter NAMM this year, many more have been made aware of their high gain heads and classic combos. The MI in MI Audio stands for Michael Ibrahim, founder and electronics genius behind the brand who, from a very young age, was exposed to electronics as both of his parents were electrical engineers.  more...

The NAMM Notebook: 2013 edition

WELCOME TO sunny southern California! Er, well... not exactly. NAMM show week in Anaheim was a chilly, wet affair effectively putting the damper on the show’s big plans for its new outdoor promenade leading to the main entrance. The stage was set the morning of Day 1, but stood empty. The weather would eventually break and allow a scheduled run of concerts, including the first evening’s headliner Tower of Power. But what happens outside plays second fiddle to the happenings indoors.  more...

Viva Tortuga!

MATT JOHNSON wanted a job that would allow him to create. While toiling in retail, he took a flyer on building kit pedals... blending his own ideas into the mix. The response was overwhelming and an effects company was born.  more...
