EMG: The 30,000 Square Foot Garage

IN AN OFFICE park down a dead-end street in Santa Rosa, California, is a 30,000 square foot garage - home and headquarters of EMG Pickups. It’s not a garage in the traditional sense of roll-down doors, automobiles and mechanics, but in the boutique mindset of how this 37-year old company operates. It was, after all, started by founder Rob Turner in his parents garage, so it stands to reason that the practices and procedures established in the mid-1970s simply expand along with the company - at least, as much as is reasonably possible.  more...

Hello Portland! A tour of gear shops in the Rose City

DREAMS OF THE west coast usually center on the warm and more glamorous climbs of southern California, with its miles of scenic beaches dotted with quaint, comfortable coastal burgs offering equal amounts of sunshine and serenity. Let’s face it, as you move north along the Pacific Coast Highway things start to get dicey. The sun fades in a cloak of persistent gray and a general gloom becomes the harbinger of the days ahead. Welcome to the Pacific Northwest!  more...

Viva Phil Collen!

AS 2013 COMES to a close, guitarist Phil Collen can look back on an eventful year. Def Leppard enjoyed a successful residency in Las Vegas that culminated in the October 18 release of Viva! Hysteria, a two-CD + DVD deluxe edition capturing the concert and the Hysteria album performed in its entirety for the first time. LIVE Lives!

IT’S BEEN seven years since we’ve had a new record from York, Pennsylvania-based rock group Live. In that time, the band has undergone some changes... most notably the noisy departure of founding vocalist Ed Kowalczyk. The group has resurfaced off-and-on in recent times, but none more high-profile than this year’s Summerland tour with other ‘90s-era hitmakers Sponge, Filter and Everclear.  more...

Track-By-Track: Tedeschi Trucks Band – Made Up Mind

AFTER a grueling three-year tour in support of its debut album Revelator, the Tedeschi Trucks Band (led by husband and wife guitarists Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi) found themselves back at Swamp Raga Studio - the duo’s personal recording sanctuary - laying down tracks for what would be the group’s sophomore effort, Made Up Mind. Both albums were produced by Jim Scott and Trucks, and engineered by Bobby Tis (background) who, along with his father, designed Swamp Raga under Derek’s direction.  more...
The Truth About Salvage Custom

The Truth About Salvage Custom

IT SOUNDED like a good plan. A freelance marketing specialist, with a nice little group of clients, decides to use a bit of downtime during a big project to build himself a pedalboard. Already a handy woodworker, the results of the initial build are impressive enough that he opts to share his creation with friends and local musicians. The feedback is phenomenal, with a few folks even willing to place an order for their own boards.  more...
M.I. knows MI

M.I. knows MI

YOU MAY know Sydney-based MI Audio for their popular and ever-expanding range of effects pedals, but Aussies have long known that they also make exceptional amplifiers too... and thanks to a trip to Winter NAMM this year, many more have been made aware of their high gain heads and classic combos. The MI in MI Audio stands for Michael Ibrahim, founder and electronics genius behind the brand who, from a very young age, was exposed to electronics as both of his parents were electrical engineers.  more...
