Choice cuts from Winter NAMM

Choice cuts from Winter NAMM

THE GREAT NAMM Booth Shuffle was in high gear at this year’s Winter NAMM show in Anaheim. A new addition to the Anaheim Convention Center meant the organizers could experiment with lumping like brands and instruments in the same area with one another.  more...
At home with Dusky

At home with Dusky

CHRIS ROSSI is a freelance software developer by day and a tone seeker by night. He started Dusky Electronics over three years ago when he found he spent more of his downtime in the garage building amps than working on software projects. Today, Dusky remains on a slow, measured growth curve with its long-term sights on greater dealer representation, a bevy of new products and bringing on staff.  more...
Swart Smarts

Swart Smarts

INSPIRATION CAN come at you from all different angles. For Wilmington, North Carolina’ Michael Swart, chief gear guru at Swart Amps, it can come from something he found in the street, at a thrift shop or in the destruction left by a hurricane. After a storm hit the coastal area a few years back, a storage building next to his house was destroyed. Swart took that adversity and parlayed it into a new-build, two-level shop — the first floor houses his amp/pedal workstations along with a stray scooter or two and a vintage VW bug from collecting days past. The second floor is a testing lounge complete with comfy couches and a tiki bar.  more...
Mojotone on the move

Mojotone on the move

ON THE DAY of our visit, the headquarters of leading music equipment manufacturer and supplier Mojotone was abuzz with the normal activity of a Wednesday morning. The crew of 50-plus staff at the Burgaw, North Carolina facility was fulfilling orders, milling cabinets, wiring pickups — all the things they would be doing any other work day. But there was something different happening as well. Boxes lined a few of the main building corridors and inventory was being palleted, wrapped and readied. Readied for the big move.  more...

Germino Amps: Tied To The Plexi-post

IN A BLUE, twelve foot by twenty foot shed in the backyard of a two-story house near the Haw River in Saxapahaw, North Carolina, Greg Germino tinkers with a standard repair job on a vintage Marshall head. It’s nothing new for him. He has been a part of the amplifier scene in the region for a decade and a half.  more...

In-house with Carr Amps

PITTSBORO, North Carolina is situated roughly 35 miles southwest of the Raleigh-Durham airport. The town of about 4,000 people boasts a large courthouse, its own failed local currency (called Plenty) and is a stone’s throw from the Haw River, which rises near Kernersville to the north and flows about 110 miles to where it joins with the Deep River to form the Cape Fear River. Nestled away in a deceptively large building in downtown Pittsboro is the headquarters of Carr Amplifiers.  more...
Summer NAMM attracts healthy crowd

Summer NAMM attracts healthy crowd

THE NATIONAL Association of Music Merchants’ (NAMM) summer soiree looks to be regaining its former footing after several years of softening attendance prior to its moving to the new Music City Center in 2015. According to the organizers, Summer NAMM welcomed 14,284 industry members to the show, a 2% increase from 2016. Of note, international attendees accounted for a growth of 14% over 2016, and nearly 28% growth over 2015.  more...
